Give Straight Razor Shaving a Try
By wetshave
For lots of people, the idea of straight razor shaving is daunting as well as a little scary. And who can blame you, most depictions of straight razors in the media is in a negative light. The only mainstream media depictions of people actually shaving with a straight razor are period pieces, and not even those portray the use correctly sometimes. Every other time a straight razor is portrayed in the media it's as a weapon of destruction and murder. Yet, that is not what such razors are for. In fact, they make horrible weapons.
For those men who are able to get past the fear of cutting, they experience the closest, most irritation free method of shaving ever invented. I mean think about it, one sharp blade is vastly superior to five less than stellar blades. If Gillette's blades were truly the bee's knees, why do they need five? Five razors to cut one hair? That makes no sense.
And are they truly any safer than an open razor? Not really. The fear of the cut throat razor is unfounded. Not only does the razor make for a horrible weapon (the edge is extremely brittle because it is so thin), but its unwieldy. While a straight razor may be a knife in the broadest sense of the word, in truth it is more like a very very thin and brittle knife. Your not afraid of a double edge blade are you? The same should be true of an open razor.
So, now that you've seen that they're actually quite safe, we can talk about the benefits. I'll admit, modern razors are extremely convenient. However, is that convienence worth the price in terms of irritation, lack of smoothness, and most importantly of all: expense? Those cartridges are Expensive!!! Straight razor sharpening done by yourself can reduce the cost of shaving to pennies a year over a lifetime. Not to mention shaving with a brush and soap/cream. Add that all up and you are saving hundreds of dollars per year. Much more than switching to Geico.
So you give up a little convenience. And yes, the open razor does need to be sharpened. I highly recommend a professional straight razor sharpening service. Sharpening your own razor is full of traps and pitfalls and hidden expenses. More hidden expenses than your cell phone bill. The only downside is the wait, but there are a few straight razor sharpeners who pride themselves on turnaround time.
For the few men who have tried their hand at straight razor shaving, it's the closest thing they can get to a perfect shave. You too can experience the most manly way to shave. You too can experience a close and razor burn free shave. Just remember to professionally sharpen your straight razor, and use it as intended.
As long as you follow some rudimentary safety procedures, you are not going to injure yourself. Shave on my friends!
